What to Text After the First Date

3 min read

When to send the first text after a date

The old "wait three days" rule is dead. Send a text within a few hours of the date ending or the next morning at the latest. Waiting too long creates unnecessary doubt in the other person's mind. If you had a good time, there is no reason to hide it.

What to say in your follow-up text

Reference something specific from the date. "I am still laughing about your story about the parking ticket" is better than "I had a great time." Specificity shows you were genuinely engaged. Then express interest in meeting again with a loose suggestion rather than a formal plan.

What if they do not text back

If you send a follow-up and do not hear back within a day or two, it is okay to send one more casual message. If that also goes unanswered, accept it gracefully and move on. Not every first date leads to a second, and that is completely normal. Dateup can help you focus on new matches so you are not fixated on one outcome.
